Onesport Mag

The front cover for its April issue put a big smile on my face when I saw Coach Rio acting like a true rock star.

Couldn’t help but recall how I met Coach Rio …

I could still remember well the day I first met Rio at the Rizal Stadium in Manila. He was coaching Philippine Team track athletes then. He organized the UP Great Run sometime in 2007. Rio then was still a newbie in the arena of race organizing. Our group, Happy Feet, liked the singlet material he used that the group agreed to have Rio as supplier. Then he finally met Master Mon and Ben Chan (Photovendo wasn’t born yet at that time) to discuss the production of singlets. That meeting paved the way to the first edition of Happy Feet singlet.

Rio became Coach Rio when he became my coach two years ago. Coach Rio was instrumental why I was able to finish the 25KM race during the New Balance Power Race at Clark, Pampanga, even without running a half marathon yet. In short, the rest was history. As a coach, he took care of us, his students, pretty well. During a race, he would never forget to give us Gatorade, GU gel, or run the race course to check on each one of us and ask how we were doing. One time, when we asked him how long would he want to be our coach, he just simply answered, “As long as you want … forever, if you like.”

He recently graced the front covers of Men’s Health Magazine and the first issue of Runner’s World Philippines. Hard work and patience brought him to where he is today. Rock on, Coach Rio!
