Why Quezon City?

Last September 8, I attended the bloggers meet for the launching of the 1st Quezon City International Marathon at Kabisera Bar and Grill, Bonifacio High Street.

Mr. Art Disini, RUNNEX Chair, shared with the group the challenge, objective, as well as the vision of holding a marathon in QC.

QC as an Asian City of the Future

It is a 360°-metropolis, a holistic city with the following features: prime business, commercial and entertainment districts, historical landmarks, world-class educational institutions, globally-competitive health and wellness facilities, the hub for government services and offices, home to major TV networks, and sustainable economic development. It is also special in some ways because of its many firsts--the 1st international marathon in QC, 1st marathon in the Philippines that combines cityscapes with nature, and 1st in continuing tradition.

It will also be a unique experience for the runners as some of them, especially, the 42k marathon runners will get the chance to pass through historical man made structures, breathtaking scenery, and the city's landmark sites such as the Quezon Memorial, University of the Philippines, La Mesa Ecopark, UP Technopark, Parks and Wildlife, and SM North EDSA.

QC is also envisioned as next greatest race in the Asian region at par with the world's major marathons such as Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Thailand, Jersey, Stanley, and Dubai. It will not be a boring marathon since barangays are mobilized to cheer on the runners. Along the way there'll be water, aid, food stations, distance markers, festive atmosphere, location or landmark trivia, inspirational messages, and other activities. Great prizes and surprises await the winners in this race.

Since QC will be celebrating its 70th year, prizes are also to be given to the 1st 70 finishers, all 70-year old runners, and all who finish their runs in 70 minutes or (1 hour, 10 minutes) plus additional 70 raffle prizes.

Vince Mendoza of Finish Line discussed the importance of the rules and regulations, route maps, and the proper way of placing the timing chips and race bibs.
